In a travelling wave tube, the wire helix is supported at a few points in eachturn by a surrounding tube of, e.g. square or triangular cross-section, whereby the effectof irregularities in the supporting dielectric tube are minimized, and space is provided forthe extra thickness at welded joints. Glass or quartz tube may be shaped by driving asuitable mandrel through heated circular tubing. Alternatively a \" V \" notch may bemachined in ceramic strip, and a further ceramic strip secured over the open \" V \" toprovide a triangular tube.
