With just a boat, a paddle (桨) and a bit of water, you can experience fun and exercise in a kayak.

Kayaking is a kind of paddling sport, and people often mistake it for canoeing(划独木舟), but there are some differences. Kayakers sit on the floor of the boat while canoeists sit on a bench. Also, kayak paddles have a wide flat part on either end, but canoe paddles have them on only one end.

Within kayaking, there are a few styles that need different levels of skill and fitness. Anyone can enjoy relaxing kayaking, most often paddling on a lake or perhaps a gentle river. Whitewater kayaking is much more exciting because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls. Surf kayakers must be both strong-willed and talented as they ride waves on the open ocean.

The difficulty involved with kayaking is transportation - a boat several meters long is not exactly easy to carry around. However, a man who had to leave his kayak behind when moving to a smaller apartment borrowed the idea of Japanese paper folding, and made a new type of special kayak-it can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing the kayak to easily fit in a car. In this way, the problem was perfectly solved.

Kayaking can offer sightseeing opportunities and a good way to exercise certain parts of the body. Paddling is helpful for strengthening the upper body and it requires continuing turning of your main body, giving it some great exercise. Another advantage is that these movements are gentler on the body’s joints and tissues(关节和组织)than running. Kayaking doesn’t just improve the health of the body, though-it also has been shown to make you less stressed as well. With so many benefits, why not head to the closest water and give it a try?

51. Do kayakers sit on the floor or on a bench of the boat while kayaking? 52. Why is whitewater kayaking much more exciting? 53. What is special about the new type of kayak?

54. Do you think kayaking will become popular in China? Why or why not? (Give at least 2 reasons)

Science shows that there is a right way to build habits that last. Here are some tips to make exercise one of them.

Start small

A goal of exercising for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week may sound good. But how likely are you to follow through? The bigger your goal is, the more likely you are to fail and give up. It’s better to start with easy exercise goals you know you can achieve because you’ll build self-confidence when you meet them. Then you can move on to bigger goals.

Use triggers

Triggers are simply reminders — activities, places, or objects — that kick of an automatic (自动的) reaction. They help you start exercising without thinking or making decisions. For example, the alarm clock goes off and you’re out of the door for your walk. You spot your sports shoes right by the bed and you’re up and running. Find ways to build triggers into your day to make exercise a no-brainer.

Reward (奖励) yourself

People who often exercise tend to do so because of the rewards it brings to their lives, such as more energy, better sleep and a greater sense of happiness. However, these can be long-term rewards. When you’re starting an exercise program, it’s important to give yourself immediate rewards if you successfully complete a workout. Choose something you look forward to, but don’t allow yourself to do it until after exercise. It can be something as simple as having a hot bath or a favorite cup of coffee.

Choose exercise that makes you feel happy and confident

If your workout is unpleasant or makes you feel bad or unhappy, you’re unlikely to stick with it. Don’t choose exercise like running or lifting weights at the gym just because you think that’s what you should do. Instead, pick activities that fit your lifestyle, abilities and taste. 32. Why is it better to start with easy exercise goals? _________________________________ 33. How can triggers help us?

34. What is the important thing to do after we complete a workout? _________________________________

35. Tom wants to keep exercising but considers running unpleasant. What do you advise him to do? _________________________________ 36. What is the passage mainly about? _________________________________

Hector, the Superhero

Hector dreamed of being a superhero, just like Universe Man. If he were a superhero, he would zoom high in the sky and save cats stuck in trees. He would stop robbers with his superpowers. He would turn bad guys into ants or even cabbages.

One day, as he practiced flying around his room, his mom knocked on his door. Remember, you're going to the eye doctor today,\" she said.

\"But Mom, \" Hector said. \"I can see fine.\"

\"You might need glasses to see better, \" Mom said. \"Then you wouldn't have to hold your comics (漫画书)up to your nose. And you'd look cool, like a movie star!”

“I don't want to be a movie star. I want to be a superhero, like Universe Man. And he doesn't wear glasses.\" Hector said. None of the other kids in his class wore them, either. What would they think?

Hector and his mom went into the department store. They passed by superhero T-shirts, action figures, and games. Was that a Universe Man toy on the top shelf? He squinted (眯着眼看),but he couldn't tell.

The eye doctor9 s office in the department store had racks and racks of eyeglass frames, plus huge pictures of smiling people wearing glasses. Those smiles didn't fool Hector. They weren't superheroes.

Hector sat in a big chair. The doctor checked his eyes by pointing to a chart of the letters. The top line was easy, the second line he could guess, but the next lines were blurry. Then Hector looked through a huge machine, like a thick, heavy mask. The doctor turned a wheel and changed the lens on the machine again and again. At last, it was time for picking frames. But Hector didn't see any frames a superhero would wear. He put a pair of blue frames on and looked in the mirror. \"They're OK.\" But he looked different. Not like Universe Man at all.

One week later, Hector9s glasses were ready. They felt funny on his nose, but not too bad. Hector looked around. Wow! His mom9s eyes were green! How come he had never noticed that silver in Dad's hair? And there was a lucky penny, lying on the ground for him to pick up!

Everything was sharp and clear. No bad guys could get past him now. With his super glasses, he could save the world! \"I have the power!” he cried. 54. What did Hector dream of being? 55. Did Hector want to wear glasses at first? 56. Where was the eye doctor9s office? 57. When were Hector5 s glasses ready? 58. How did Hector feel about his glasses?

No. (I don’t think kayaking will become popular in China.) Because if we want to kayak, we will need a car to carry the boat around. We all know not everybody can afford a car. Besides, we need water to do kayaking. If we live far from rivers or lakes, kayaking is not a choice for us.
