3. Those who were able took advantage of opportunities for success and happiness that presented themselves.

 Once the opportunities appear, those wise people would grasp them in order to be successful and happy,

4. I did not believe there was really any good to be had in tearing me away from home and throwing me into the huge, high-walled building.

 I thought it was no good forcing me out of home and go to school.
