One or each of the contacting surfaces in the transfer process consists ofor comprises a chromium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose to facilitate separation of thesurfaces and avoid unsharpness in the transferred image, especially after a very shorttime of contact. Image-receiving and silver halide emulsion materials of various formshave such surfaces. In Example 1 a baryta-coated paper is coated with a suspensionformed from from gelatin, hypo, sodium sulphide and cobaltous nitrate and overcoatedwith a solution of the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose with potassium chromicsulphate and saponine to form the receiving material, and this is laid on an exposedemulsion layer and sprayed with developer for 2 seconds to give a clear positive after 10seconds of squeezing contact. Twenty further examples describe variations mainly usingother, similar, salts; ten of them, however, include the use of soluble strontium salts inthe receiving materials, and Example 21 has strontium chloride in a silver chloride
