Ideal for automated adjustments on high volumeproduction lines, they are also well suited forapplications where equipment requiring periodicadjustment is either difficult to access or located in ahazardous or remote environment. The CAT5115 contains a 32-tap series resistor arrayconnected between two terminals RH and RL. An up/down counter and decoder that are controlled by threeinput pins, determines which tap is connected to thewiper, RW. The wiper is always set to the mid point, tap15 at power up. The tap position is not stored in memory.Wiper-control of the CAT5115 is accomplished withthree input control pins, CS, U/D, and INC. The INCinput increments the wiper in the direction which isdetermined by the logic state of the U/D input. The CSinput is used to select the device. The digitally programmable potentiometer can beused as a three-terminal resistive divider or as atwo-terminal variable resistor. DPPs bring variability andprogrammability to a wide variety of applicationsincluding control, parameter adjustments, andsignal processing. For a pin-compatible device that recalls a stored tapposition on power-up refer to the CAT5114 data sheet.FUNCTIONAL DIAGRAMVcc(Supply Voltage) U/DINCCS5-BITUP/DOWNCOUNTER3130RH/VHVH/RHRH/VHUP/DOWN(U/D)INCREMENT(INC)DEVICE SELECT(CS)ControlandMemoryRW/VW29ONE28OFTHIRTY TWODECODERTRANSFERGATESRESISTORARRAYVW/RW2PORRL/VLVccCONTROLCIRCUITRY10RL/VLRW/VWGNDGENERALVSSVL/RLGENERALDETAILEDELECTRONIC POTENTIOMETERIMPLEMENTATION© 2004 by Catalyst Semiconductor, Inc.

INCU/DRHGND12348765VCCCSRLRWPIN DESCRIPTIONS

INC: Increment Control Input

The INC input moves the wiper in the up or downdirection determined by the condition of the U/D input.U/D: Up/Down Control Input

The U/D input controls the direction of the wipermovement. When in a high state and CS is low, any high-to-low transition on INC will cause the wiper to move oneincrement toward the RH terminal. When in a low stateand CS is low, any high-to-low transition on INC willcause the wiper to move one increment towards theRL terminal.

RH: High End Potentiometer Terminal

RH is the high end terminal of the potentiometer. It is notrequired that this terminal be connected to a potentialgreater than the RL terminal. Voltage applied to the RHterminal cannot exceed the supply voltage, VCC or gobelow ground, GND.

RW: Wiper Potentiometer Terminal

RW is the wiper terminal of the potentiometer. Its positionon the resistor array is controlled by the control inputs, INC,U/D and CS. Voltage applied to the RW terminal cannotexceed the supply voltage, VCC or go below ground, GND.RL: Low End Potentiometer Terminal

RL is the low end terminal of the potentiometer. It is notrequired that this terminal be connected to a potentialless than the RH terminal. Voltage applied to the RLterminal cannot exceed the supply voltage, VCC or gobelow ground, GND. RL and RH are electricallyinterchangeable.

CS: Chip Select

The chip select input is used to activate the control inputof the CAT5115 and is active low. When in a highstate, activity on the INC and U/D inputs will notaffect or change the position of the wiper.

DEVICE OPERATION

The CAT5115 operates like a digitally controlledpotentiometer with RH and RL equivalent to the highand low terminals and RW equivalent to the mechanicalpotentiometer's wiper. There are 32 available tappositions including the resistor end points, RH and RL.There are 31 resistor elements connected in seriesbetween the RH and RL terminals. The wiper terminal isconnected to one of the 32 taps and controlled by threeinputs, INC, U/D and CS. These inputs control a five-bitup/down counter whose output is decoded to select thewiper position.

With CS set LOW the CAT5115 is selected and willrespond to the U/D and INC inputs. HIGH to LOWtransitions on INC wil increment or decrement thewiper (depending on the state of the U/D input and five-bit counter). The wiper, when at either fixed terminal, acts like its mechanical equivalent and does not movebeyond the last position. When the CAT5115 is powered-down, the wiper position is reset. When power is restored, the counter is set to the mid point, tap 15.
